to say if they are alike you have to understand that not a 3% of words are similar. It’s like if I say that German and English are alike just because some words are the same. Portuguese has more in common with Gallician (My regional language) and also with his regional language (I think he said Valencian) but with the Spanish it only has in common the way for constructing phrases, because all the words are not the same.
“Esqueceu = Elegir” is it alike? NO
“Esqueceu = Escollir” is it alike? YES

Let me tell you that I speak Spanish at 100% and there’s just a few similarities with Spanish. I also Speak the regional language of my comunity in Spain (Called Valencian) and that one has a lot in common with Portugues than the Spanish.
