Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is a seaside resort in Quintana Roo, east of Mexico. Playa del Carmen has 100,383 inhabitants (2005 census) and is the main place of the town Solidaridad. Playa del Carmen is situated on the Riviera Maya.

Even during pre-Columbian times, Playa del Carmen, then still called Xaman-Ha, served as the departure point for the boats to Cozumel. The Mayans left for Cozumel because of the shrine for the goddess Ixchel.

Location Review

Playa del Carmen is ‘discovered’ by tourists on their way to Cozumel. The city is now mainly visited by tourists fleeing from the bustle of the nearby located city Cancun. The city attracts people from all over the world because of its very relaxed atmosphere and great beaches.
