Guanajuato (Pure Pecha: Kuanajuato) is a city in Mexico and capital of the state it resides in. The city lies about 370 km northwest of Mexico City, at an altitude of 1996 meters above sea level. The city has 70,798 inhabitants (2005 census).


Guanajuato was founded in 1554 to the Rio because of the Guanajuato silver mines in the area. It was in 1741 the status of the city. The city played a leading role in the Mexican War of Independence, as this in 1810 was the first major city which was welcomed independence movement of Miguel Hidalgo.


The city is famous for its Spanish colonial architecture from the time. The historic center of Guanajuato state since 1988 on the World Heritage list.

There are numerous museums, including:

  • A museum on Don Quijote de la Mancha and the mummy museum, which exhibits the hundreds of mummies come from the region.
  • Alhondiga the Granaditas, a former grain warehouse.
  • Teatro Juárez

Other attractions are:

  • The catacombes in the west of the city.
  • The monument of El Pípila
